Controlling the controllable...

YES!!!

I didn’t have a lot of control over a lot of what happened over the years with Darren & this disease, BUT I had the power to control how I responded to it! Were there moments where I literally wanted to freak out?? YES, but I focused on my breathing and remained calm for Darren and the kids. And when things settled down.. I went straight to hot yoga and started taking care of me. You have the power my friends!!

Advice on what to do when someone is diagnosed with cancer

When a friend is diagnosed with cancer, it can be difficult to know exactly what to do or say. Although there is truly nothing that can take the sting of this diagnosis away, you may consider sending a gift that could bring some comfort to the cancer fighter.

Some Cancer Care Package Ideas:
Be sure to have your loved one check with their doctor to make sure it is safe to consume or use the products you’ve provided.
* Warm blankets and socks. Clinics and hospitals — where chemotherapy is administered — are often chilly, so blankets and warm socks can make your loved one more comfortable.
* Moisturizers and lip balm. During chemotherapy, a common side effect is dry, painful skin and lips. Gentle skin moisturizers and lip balms can relieve dry skin and prevent sores or rashes.
* Headwear and/or salon gift cards. For many people receiving chemotherapy treatment, losing their hair causes both physical and emotional discomfort. You can help by sending a gift card for a salon where they can be fitted for a wig, have their head shaved, or receive other beauty treatments. Headscarves are also a thoughtful gift; they provide both warmth and security for those who have lost their hair. Check out @HopeScarves, an amazing business that offers words of hope along with a scarf from a previous cancer fighter.
* Snacks and water. These items serve many purposes, not the least of which is that snacking can pass the time during chemo treatments. Snacks like hard candy and fruit also help to counteract dry mouth and metal mouth (a metallic taste), common side effects of chemotherapy. Dehydration often causes headaches during chemotherapy, so it’s important for your loved one to drink lots of water.
* Entertainment. Treatments can be long and grueling, but a good book or movie can help pass the time. Learn your loved one’s favorite form of entertainment and consider sending some magazines, e-books, a video streaming subscription, or a book of crossword puzzles.
* Inspiration. For people fighting cancer, staying positive can be nearly as essential as physical health. An inspirational book or quote, or even just a kind note, can go a long way in bolstering your loved one’s strength and spirit. Check out my favorite author & book:

How to combat cancer treatment & feel better

Cancer treatment may cause fatigue, and being tired is not likely to inspire you to begin a new exercise program. Light, daily exercise before you start to feel tired will make it easier for you to continue regular daily physical activity after your treatment begins.

Once you begin treatment, light, regular physical activity is very good for you. It will improve your appetite, stimulate digestion, prevent constipation, and provide additional energy. Physical activity will also help decrease stress, improve mood, and maintain muscle tone. Always consult your doctor before beginning any exercise program. Do you struggle finding a workout that you can do?
